Also called a spheroid. In the Cartesian coordinate system O- xyz , a quadratic surface given by the equation x ² / a ² + y ² / b ² + z ² / c ² = 1 ( a , b , c > 0) is called an ellipsoid. In particular, when any two of a , b , and c are equal, the above equation becomes, for example, ( x ² + y ² )/ a ² + z ² / c ² = 1 (when a = b ). This is the surface obtained by rotating an ellipse in the xz plane around the z axis. This is called an ellipsoid of revolution. Depending on whether the axis of rotation is the major or minor axis of the ellipse, it is called a prolate or oblate spheroid, respectively.
