Ryounshu - Ryounshu

Japanese:
Ryounshu - Ryounshu

A collection of Chinese poetry and prose from the early Heian period. It was compiled in 814 (Kōnin 5) by Ono no Minemori, Sugawara no Kiyokimi, and Isayamano Fumitsugu. Although the preface refers to it as "Ryōun Shinshū," it is usually called Ryōunshū, meaning "a collection of poems so excellent that they surpass the clouds." It is a collection with a strong bureaucratic feel, selecting 90 poems by 23 poets (however, the extant version contains 24 poems and 91 poems) from the period between 782 (Enryaku 1) and 814, and arranged in order of official rank. In terms of style, the poems included in this collection are 42 five-character poems and 49 seven-character poems, which is fewer five-character poems than the previous Kaifusō. In terms of authors, the highest number of poems collected was by Emperor Saga with 22, followed by Kaya no Toyotoshi and Ono no Minemori with 13, Emperor Junna with five, and Sugawara no Kiyotoshi with four.
