A general term for insects of the family Cicindelidae in the order Coleoptera, or a single species of insect. The tiger beetle Cicindela japonica (illustration) lives in various locations from Honshu to Kyushu. Its body is colored in indigo, purple, red, green, etc. and has a metallic luster. It has long, slender thoracic legs that support it high above the ground, and sharp mandibles to capture prey. It is about 20 mm long. It often appears from May to August, flying close to the ground in search of insects and other small animals, and when it lands, it scans its surroundings with its large compound eyes.
