Renoir, P. (English spelling) RenoirP

…French film director. Born in Montmartre, Paris, as the second son of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. He grew up in a film family with actor Pierre R. (1885-1952) as his older brother, producer Claude R. (1901- ) as his younger brother, and cinematographer Claude Renoir (1914- ) as his nephew (Pierre's eldest son). He married Catherine Herselin, who had been a model for his father's paintings, and began making films to cast her as an actress. He gained attention with his silent films, from a kind of avant-garde film that played with "cinematic tricks" (The Water Maiden, 1924) to Nana (1926), which was strongly influenced by the "naturalistic realism" of Erich von Stroheim's The Foolish Wife (1921). In the talkie era, he made a number of masterpieces that remain in the history of cinema, from The Bitch (1931) to The Lower Depths (1936) to The Rules of the Game (1939), and became one of the leading masters of prewar French cinema, which film historian Georges Sadoul named "poetic realism."

…フランスの映画監督。画家ピエール･オーギュスト･ルノアールの次男としてパリのモンマルトルに生まれる。俳優のピエール･ルノアールPierre R.(1885‐1952)は兄，プロデューサーのクロード･ルノアールClaude R.(1901‐　)は弟，そして撮影監督(カメラマン)のクロード･ルノアール(1914‐　)は甥(兄ピエールの長男)という映画一家。父の絵のモデルをやっていたカトリーヌ･エスランと結婚，彼女を女優にするために映画をつくりはじめ，〈映画的トリック〉に興じた一種のアバンギャルド映画(《水の娘》1924)からエーリッヒ･フォン･シュトロハイム監督の《愚なる妻》(1921)の〈自然主義リアリズム〉に強烈に影響された《女優ナナ》(1926)に至るサイレント作品で注目され，トーキー時代に入るや，《牝犬》(1931)から《どん底》(1936)をへて《ゲームの規則》(1939)に至る数々の映画史上に残る名作をつくり，映画史家ジョルジュ･サドゥールによって〈詩的リアリズムréalisme poétique〉と名づけられた戦前のフランス映画を代表する巨匠の一人となった。…
