…French film director. Born in Montmartre, Paris, as the second son of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. He grew up in a film family with actor Pierre R. (1885-1952) as his older brother, producer Claude R. (1901- ) as his younger brother, and cinematographer Claude Renoir (1914- ) as his nephew (Pierre's eldest son). He married Catherine Herselin, who had been a model for his father's paintings, and began making films to cast her as an actress. He gained attention with his silent films, from a kind of avant-garde film that played with "cinematic tricks" (The Water Maiden, 1924) to Nana (1926), which was strongly influenced by the "naturalistic realism" of Erich von Stroheim's The Foolish Wife (1921). In the talkie era, he made a number of masterpieces that remain in the history of cinema, from The Bitch (1931) to The Lower Depths (1936) to The Rules of the Game (1939), and became one of the leading masters of prewar French cinema, which film historian Georges Sadoul named "poetic realism." *Some of the terminology that mentions "Renoir, P." is listed below.
