1774‐1853 German geologist. Born in a mansion near Berlin to a wealthy Prussian aristocrat, he entered the Freiberg School of Mines and studied under AG Werner. After studying at the Universities of Halle and Göttingen, he worked for the Prussian government on mining surveys and also conducted surveys in various parts of Europe. As his teacher Werner's theory of hydrogeology did not match the facts of nature, he and his friend A. von Humboldt became volcanologists, believing that underground volcanic forces move the earth and create mountains.
