Dnieper [river] - Dnieper
A large river originating in western Russia. In Ukraine, it is called the Dnipro River. It originates in the Valdai Hills and flows southeast, then curves southwest, before flowing through Belarus and Ukraine and emptying into the Black Sea. It is 2,200 km long and the third largest in Europe after the Volga and Danube. Its drainage area is 504,000 km2 . In addition to the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station (completed in 1932, output 558,000 kW) near Zaporozhye in Ukraine, there are hydroelectric power stations in Kakhovka, Dneprodzerzhinsk, Kremenchug, and other places. The upper reaches are forested areas, while the middle and lower reaches are steppe areas, and it is navigable all the way to Drogobzha in Russia. It freezes for 12 to 4 months. Historically, it was an important route connecting the Slavic world and the Byzantine Empire.

ロシア西部に発する大河。ウクライナではドニープロDnipro川と呼ぶ。バルダイ丘陵に発して南東流,次いで南西に湾曲して流れ,白ロシア,ウクライナを経て黒海に注ぐ。全長2200kmで,ボルガ川,ドナウ川に次ぎヨーロッパ第3位。流域面積50万4000km2。ウクライナのザポロージエ付近のドニエプル水力発電所(1932年完成,出力55万8000kW)のほかカホフカ,ドニエプロジェルジンスク,クレメンチュグなどに水力発電所がある。上流は森林地帯,中・下流はステップ地帯にあり,ロシアのドロゴブジャまで航行可能。12〜4月間凍結。歴史上,スラブ世界とビザンティン帝国を結ぶ重要なルートであった。
