Japanese: 臨沂 - りんぎ

A city in southern Shandong Province, China. Population 1.71 million (1994). Named after the Yi River, which originates in Mount Yishan. It is located in the center of the plains made up of the Yi River, Shui River, and Shu River, south of the Shandong Hills, and is the southern gateway to the Qilu region, which is connected to the Huaibei Plain to the south. It was a battleground for invading Qilu from the south, and a key point for attacking the south from the north. It was a route used by Wu and Yue during the Spring and Autumn period, the Southern Song Dynasty, and Zhu Yuanzhang (Emperor Hongwu) of the Ming Dynasty to advance north, and was a key location when the Song and Jin Dynasties fought each other. In modern times, it was a resistance base for the Chinese army against the Japanese army advancing south.

中国，山東省南部の都市。人口171万(1994)。沂山に源をもつ沂水(河)に臨むゆえに名づけられた。山東丘陵の南，沂水，水（ほうすい）(祊河)，沭河（じゆつが）等のつくる平野の中心にあり，南の淮北（わいほく）平野とつらなる斉魯地域の南の門戸の位置にある。南方より斉魯に侵入する際の必争の地であり，また北方より南方を攻略する際の要衝であった。春秋時代の呉･越，南朝の宋，明の朱元璋(洪武帝)等が北方へ進出する際の経路であり，また宋･金が争ったときの要地となり，近代においては，南下する日本軍に対し中国軍の抵抗拠点が設けられた。
