Pampas deer

Japanese: パンパスジカ（英語表記）pampas deer

A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla. An elegant deer that lives in the grasslands (pampas) of South America, with males having three-branched (tri-pointed) horns. Females have no horns. The body is light reddish brown, the insides and undersides of the ears are white, and the upper side of the tail is dark brown or black. Males have canines in the upper jaw. It is found in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Its body length is 110-130 cm, shoulder height is 70-75 cm, and tail length is 10-15 cm. It does not normally enter forests or mountainous areas, but lives in small herds of 5-15 individuals in open grasslands.

偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。雄が三つに枝わかれした(三尖の)角をもつ，南アメリカの草原(パンパス)にすむ優美なシカ。雌には角はない。体色は明るい赤褐色で，耳の内側と腹面は白色，尾の上面が暗褐色ないし黒色。雄には上あごの犬歯がある。ブラジル，パラグアイ，アルゼンチンに分布する。体長110～130cm，肩高70～75cm，尾長10～15cm。森林や山岳地帯にはふつう入らず，開けた草原に5～15頭からなる小さな群れですむ。
