[Ethylene as a plant hormone]
At the end of the 19th century, it was known that gas leaks caused by broken gas pipes for gas lamps in various parts of Europe caused harmful and abnormal changes in the morphology of street trees, but in 1901, a young Austrian scientist, D.Neljubow, showed that the abnormal morphology seen in pea seedlings grown in a laboratory or greenhouse was caused by ethylene in the gas. Later, when it was discovered that some fungi and bacteria and most higher plants themselves produce ethylene and that this plays a role in regulating the normal growth process of plants, ethylene came to be recognized as a type of plant hormone.
