A branch of Shiite Islam that recognizes Hussein's grandson Zayd and his descendants as Imams, and was established in the 9th century. Its doctrine is the closest to Sunni doctrine among Shiites, and does not recognize any supernatural qualities in Imams, does not believe in the existence of "hidden imams," and does not recognize fixed-term marriage (mut'a) or sacred lies (taqiyya). It is currently mainstream in Yemen and the Caspian Sea coastal countries. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
