A perennial grass of the grass family (illustration) that is counted as one of the seven autumn herbs under the name of Obana. It is commonly found in sunny mountains and fields throughout Japan, where it often grows in clusters, with dense stems and leaves, forming large plants. The stem is cylindrical, about 1m tall, somewhat thick, solid, and knotted. The leaves are linear, 30-50cm long, 6-10mm wide, gradually tapering to a point, with a thick, white midvein, and a long sheath at the base, with long hairs at the sheath opening. The inflorescence is borne at the top of the stem in autumn, in the form of a 15-30cm long corymb, with 7 to many branches (tassels) on a short central axis, and each tassel is densely covered with spikelets from its base to its tip.
