...The original text without the "New" was compiled by J. Herschel, and was expanded in 1888 by Danish astronomer Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer (1852-1926) to form the NGC. Dreyer published the Index Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, an additional catalog of the NGC star catalog, in 1995 and 1906. In 1973, the Revised NGC was published after checking this with the Palomar Photographic Atlas, and according to this, about 80% of the NGC objects are outside the Milky Way Galaxy, 10% are within the Galaxy, and the remaining 10% are confirmed to exist. ...
