Sand lance - Sand lance (English spelling)
A marine fish of the Sandlanceidae family in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is found along the coasts from Hokkaido to Kyushu. In many regions, small ones are called kounago, and there are many other local names, such as kamasugo in Hyogo Prefecture, mero-odo in Sendai, and kanagi in northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture. The body is very slender and cylindrical, with no pelvic fin, and numerous skin folds running diagonally backward along the sides of the body. The back is bluish, but the sides and abdomen are silvery white. It has low mobility and there are several local populations with different morphologies. It swims during the day, but at night it lives a benthic life on the sandy bottom of the coast.
