A small shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows in the crevices of rocky areas in high mountains (illustration). The leaves are scaly and tightly attached to the stem, and the overall shape is string-like, a shape adapted to the harsh environment of high mountains. This shape is what gave it its Japanese name. The stem creeps and branches out into many branches that are tightly attached to the rocks. The leaves are very small, thick, diamond-shaped, with a white membranous edge on the upper half, and are 1 to 1.5 mm long. In summer, a long, slender stalk extends from the side of the leaf at the end of the branch and produces a single drooping flower. The corolla is white, bell-shaped, with five lobes at the end, and contains 10 stamens. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
