Meiji Ichidai Onna - Meiji Ichidai Onna

Japanese:
Meiji Ichidai Onna - Meiji Ichidai Onna

A new school play by Shotaro Kawaguchi. The novel of the same title was serialized in the September to December 1935 issue of All Dokumono and was adapted by the author himself. It premiered at the Meijiza Theater in Tokyo in November of the same year. The case of Hanai Oume, a Yanagibashi geisha who adored the kabuki actor Sawamura Gennosuke, killing box shop owner Yasugi Minekichi, is dramatized in Kawatake Mokuami's Tsukitoume Kaoru Oboroyo (1888) and Kanaya Koume (1919), adapted by Mayama Seika from a novel by Ihara Seiseien. In Kawaguchi's version, Oume is portrayed as a passive, demure woman, the opposite of the traditional version, and Minokichi (Minekichi) is not an enemy but a pure, devoted man, and the story, including Sen'e (Gennosuke), is a tragic tale of pure love caused by the entanglement of emotions. Hanayagi Shotaro's Oume and Oya Ichijiro's Minokichi were both great roles.
