Iwabitsuyama ruins

Japanese:
Iwabitsuyama ruins
A Yayoi period graveyard located in the shade of rocks near the summit of Mt. Iwabitsu, 802m above sea level, in Haramachi, Agatsuma-machi, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture. It was excavated by Sugihara Sosuke and others in 1939. It is a steep mountain with a height of about 400m on the north bank of the Agatsuma River, and there are many rock shelters and semi-caves. In the shade of Takanosu rock, 19 pieces of pottery were buried in three groups in a rock bed of about 100m2, and one piece of pottery was placed in each of two locations. Near the pottery groups, there were more than two human bones of men and women. Although no human bone fragments were found in the pottery, an excavation of the Tenjinmae site in Chiba Prefecture after World War II revealed that the pottery served as a bone container, and that this type of site was a special burial site that characterized the early Yayoi period in eastern Japan as a reburial tomb.
