Non-ferrous metals industry

Japanese: 非鉄金属工業 - ひてつきんぞくこうぎょう

Non-ferrous metals is a general term for metals other than iron in a broad sense, but generally refers to metals such as copper, lead, zinc, tin, and tungsten, with aluminum and magnesium being light metals, and gold, silver, and platinum being precious metals. Copper, lead, and zinc are used in large quantities as various basic materials, and are abundant in resources, so they are called base metals. The non-ferrous metal industry is the industry that processes these non-ferrous metals to make products. The process of mining ore, dressing, and refining is called non-ferrous metal mining.

非鉄金属とは広義には鉄以外の金属の総称であるが，一般的には銅，鉛，亜鉛，スズ，タングステンなどの金属を指し，アルミニウムやマグネシウムなどは軽金属，金，銀，白金などは貴金属として区別することが多い。なかでも銅，鉛，亜鉛は各種の基礎資材として大量に使用され，資源も豊富なため，ベースメタルと呼ばれる。非鉄金属工業とは，これら非鉄金属を加工して製品を作る産業のことである。鉱石を採掘し，選鉱，精錬する工程は非鉄金属鉱業と呼ばれる。
