Japanese: オウレン(黄蓮∥黄連) - オウレン（英語表記）Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino

A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family that grows in mountainous areas, especially on the forest floor of coniferous forests. Its Chinese name, Huang Lian, refers to a different species, C. chinensis Franch. The underground stem spreads horizontally, and first produces several basal leaves that overwinter. The basal leaves are compound, trifoliate once, twice, or three to four times, and are called Kikubaouren var. japonica , Seribaouren var. dissecta (Yatabe) Nakai, and Koseribaouren var. major (Miq.) Satake, respectively.

山地の，とくに針葉樹林の林床に生えるキンポウゲ科の多年草。漢名の黄蓮は別種のC.chinensis Franch.をさす。地下茎は横にはい，先に越冬する数枚の根生葉をつける。根生葉は1回，2回，または3～4回3出複葉で，それぞれキクバオウレンvar.japonica，セリバオウレンvar.dissecta (Yatabe) Nakai，コセリバオウレンvar.major (Miq.) Satakeとよばれる。
