An uprising that took place in October and November 1869 (Meiji 2) in Niikawa County, Ecchu Province (present-day Toyama Prefecture), under the Kanazawa Domain. It was so named because many of the participating farmers wore "bandori" (a type of straw raincoat). After years of poor harvests, villages petitioned through the Tomura (a village official who governs around 10 villages) for tax reductions and relief, but the Tomura did not take up the petitions. As October began, unrest intensified, and an uprising began on the 12th. After repeated petitions and strong appeals in various places, the uprising turned to smashing and burning down the villages from the 23rd, with the number of participants reaching a peak of 20,000. However, on November 3rd, the uprising was put down by the Domain's rifle squad, with dozens of casualties. This turmoil, which subsequently resulted in a major reshuffle of ten village officials, was one of the most representative social reform uprisings of the time.
