Chitose Line

Japanese:
Chitose Line

The name of the Hokkaido Railway Company's track. The line is 56.6 km long, double tracked and AC electrified, and crosses the southern Ishikari Plain, connecting Sapporo, Chitose Airport, and Tomakomai. It is the main line with the highest traffic density among the JR lines in Hokkaido. It was opened by Hokkaido Railway (Second Plan) in 1926, and was nationalized in 1943 as the Chitose Line. After World War II, the Chitose Line replaced the Hakodate Main Line between Oshamanbe and Otaru, which had a steep slope, and many of the main trains running between Hakodate and Otaru passed through it. By 1973, the entire line was double tracked and the new line between Shiroishi and Kaminopporo was installed, making it the line with the highest number of trains in Hokkaido. Furthermore, in 1980, electrification of the Sapporo-Numahata-Muroran section was completed, and with the establishment of an air traffic-centered system, Chitose Airport (now Minami-Chitose) Station was established adjacent to Chitose Airport, which became the gateway to Hokkaido. This station became the departure station for the JR Sekisho Line, and trains between Sapporo and Obihiro now run via the Chitose Line. New Chitose Airport opened in 1988, and in 1992 (Heisei 4) the old Chitose Airport Station was renamed Minami-Chitose Station, and the 2.6 km airport link line linking Minami-Chitose Station and New Chitose Airport Station was opened. The Chitose Line functions as the largest trunk line in Hokkaido's railway network.
