Pandora - Pandora (English spelling)

The first woman on earth in Greek mythology. Zeus was angry that Prometheus had stolen fire from heaven and given it to humans. In order to get revenge, he ordered Hephaestus to create a human woman from mud to bring disaster to humans. The gods gave her various characteristics and skills, decorated her, and had him take her to Prometheus' brother Epimetheus. Pandora can be interpreted as "a woman who has been given all gifts by the gods" or "a gift from all the gods to humans." Although Epimetheus had been warned by his brother Prometheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, when he saw the beautiful Pandora he forgot and made her his wife. Thus, Zeus was able to send a race of women who devoured all the household savings into the human world and spread disaster among humans. Pandora also received a jar (or a box) from the gods. She had been warned not to look inside, as it was filled with all kinds of disasters and evils, but out of curiosity she opened it, and the evils immediately scattered in all directions. From that moment on, humanity was plagued by misfortunes such as various illnesses and disasters. Pandora quickly put the lid back on, but only the vain "hope" remained inside.

ギリシア神話における地上最初の女。プロメテウスが天上の火を盗んで人間に与えたのを怒ったゼウスは、仕返しのため人間に災いをもたらせようと、ヘファイストスに命じて泥から人間の女をつくらせた。神々はこれにさまざまな性格や技量を与え、飾り物もつけて、プロメテウスの弟エピメテウスのところへ連れていかせた。パンドラとは、「神々からすべての贈り物を与えられた女」の意とも、「すべての神々からの人間への贈り物」の意とも解釈される。エピメテウスは、かねてより兄プロメテウスからゼウスの贈り物を受けないよう戒められていたにもかかわらず、美しいパンドラを見るとそれを忘れ、妻にしてしまう。こうしてゼウスは家の蓄えを片っ端から食い尽くす女という種族を人間界へ送り出し、人間どもに災いをまき散らすことができた。またパンドラは、神々から甕(かめ)（または手箱）をもらってきた。その中にはあらゆる災いや害悪が詰まっていたので、彼女は見てはいけないと忠告されていたが、好奇心から開けてしまい、それらはたちまち四方に飛び散った。このときから人類は、さまざまな病苦と災難などの不幸にみまわれることになる。パンドラはあわてて蓋(ふた)をしたが、その中にはむなしい「希望」だけが残ったという。
