Colloid mill

Japanese: コロイドミル（英語表記）colloid mill

A general term for a grinding machine that produces ultra-fine particles. It is a device that breaks down solid particles into smaller particles than is possible with normal grinding methods. Solid particles are poured into the liquid between two closely rotating surfaces, and a shearing force is applied to the liquid, pulverizing the solids and dispersing them throughout the liquid. Some grinding machines have toothed rotating surfaces, which can produce a colloid-like material of less than 1 μm. This type of wet grinding machine is the most common, but there are also various other types, such as dry grinding machines. It is used in the paper, rubber, cosmetics, food filler, pigment, paint, and enamel industries.

超微粒にする粉砕機の総称。普通の粉砕手段では不可能な細分化を行なう装置で，固体粒子を液体とともに，きわめて接近して回転する二つの面の間に流し込み，液体に剪断力を与えて，固体を微粉化して液体中に分散させるようになっている。回転面を歯状にしたものもあり，1μm以下のコロイドに近いものが得られる。普通はこのような湿式のものが多いが，ほかに乾式など各種の形式がある。製紙，ゴム，化粧品，食品などの充填材，顔料，塗料，エナメル工業に利用される。
