〘Noun〙 In early modern times, a person who was privately employed by a police officer of the magistrate's office to search for and arrest criminals. A detective. Okahiki. ※Kinryo Ko - Zenshu, Volume 3, Volume 28, November 27, 1759 (9th year of Horeki) "The term okahiki means, <omitted>, to absolve the person of his crime and arrest the surgeon." [Additional note] "Oka" means nearby , and can mean someone who is nearby and guides the person, or "oka" means temporary , and in contrast to the doshin's arrest of criminals being called "honhiki," it can also mean someone who makes a provisional arrest on behalf of the doshin.

〘名〙 近世、町奉行所の同心に私的に抱えられて、犯罪人の探索、逮捕の役に当たったもの。目明かし。おかひき。※禁令考‐前集・第三・巻二八・宝暦九年(1759)一一月二七日「岡引と申候は、〈略〉其者之罪を免し、外科人を召捕候」[補注]「おか」は傍(そば)の意で、そばに居て手引きする者の意とも、また、「おか」は仮(かり)の意で、同心の犯人逮捕を「本引き」というのに対して、同心に代わって仮に逮捕する者の意ともいう。

〘名〙 旅行、または外出の際に衣類などを入れた、竹製の、ふたのない器。※随筆・孔雀楼筆記(1768)四「仲間は岡引(ヲカビキ)とて竹にて挟箱(はさみばこ)のごとくにてふたなきものをくみたるを荷(にな)ひゆく」
