Ivanov, Vsevolod Vyacheslavovich
Born: February 24, 1895, Semipalatinsk
[Died] August 15, 1963. Moscow Soviet writer. He began his creative career in 1915, and immediately after the revolution, he joined the Red Army and participated in the civil war in Siberia. In 1920, he moved to Petrograd and initially belonged to the Serapion Brothers group. He became a representative writer of early Soviet literature with works based on his own experiences in the civil war, such as The Armored Train 14-69 and Partizanskie povesti (1923). He left behind an autobiographical novel, Pokhozhdeniya fakira (34-35), its sequel, My idem v Indiyu (60), as well as historical dramas, critiques, memoirs, and travel writings.

[Died] December 24, 1901. St. Petersburg Russian dancer. Choreographer at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg (→Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company), said to be the greatest dancer of the 19th century. In 1885, he became the second ballet master of the ballet company, and co-choreographed works such as The Nutcracker (1892) and the second and fourth acts of Swan Lake (1895) under the direction of the principal choreographer Marius Petipa. He also revived Peter L. Hertel's La Fille mal gardée (1882). Although blessed with musical talent, he was overshadowed by the name of Petipa and ended his life in obscurity. (→Ballet)

Ivanov, Aleksandr

Born: 1806, Petersburg
Died in 1858. Petersburg Russian painter. In his youth, he worked as a member of the Nazarene school in Rome. He painted religious paintings on themes from both the Old and New Testaments, but his approach to depicting Christ as a human being had a great influence on Russian religious painting. His main work is the large-scale work "Christ Appears before the People" (State Tretyakov Gallery), which was painted over the long period from 1837 to 1857 and whose concept was changed 25 times. He also painted landscapes in bright tones.

ロシアの舞踊家。サンクトペテルブルグの帝室バレエ学校(→マリインスキー劇場バレエ団)の振付家で,19世紀最大の舞踊家といわれる。1885年同バレエ団の第2バレエ・マスターとなり,首席振付家マリウス・プティパのもとで『くるみ割り人形』(1892)や『白鳥の湖』(1895)の第2,第4幕などを共同振り付けした。またピョートル・L.ヘルテルの『ラ・フィーユ・マル・ガルデ』(1882)を復活した。音楽的才能には恵まれたが,プティパの名に隠れ,不遇のうちに生涯を閉じた。(→バレエ)

ロシアの画家。青年時代,ローマでナザレ派の一員として制作。新旧約両聖書をテーマとして宗教画を描いたが,キリストを人間存在として描こうとする彼の態度は,ロシアの宗教画に多くの影響を与えた。主要作品は,1837~57年の長期間にわたり,25回も構想を変更して描かれたという大作『民衆の前に現れたキリスト』 (トレチヤコフ国立美術館) 。明るい色調で風景画も描いた。
