Valerius(?) Babrios

Date of birth and death unknown. A Greek fable poet from around 100 AD. Judging from his name, he is thought to have been Italian. He lived in Asia Minor and left behind a collection of 143 fables called Aesop's Fables. Many are taken from Aesop's Fables, but some are in the style of anecdotes and short stories. His writing style is simple and uses the meter (lame anthology) that is closest to prose. Some of the fables are followed by moral lessons in prose, but these are likely to be later forgeries.

生没年不詳。紀元後100年ごろのギリシアの寓話(ぐうわ)詩人。名前からイタリア人と考えられる。小アジアに住み、143編からなる『イソップ寓話詩集』を残した。多くはイソップ物語からとったものであるが、逸話や短編小説風のものも含まれている。文体は平明で、散文にもっとも近い韻律（跛行(はこう)イアンボス）を用いている。一部の寓話のあとに散文で教訓が添えられているが、後代の偽作らしい。
