A three-act play written by German playwright Brecht, with the assistance of Elisabeth Hauptmann and music by Kurt Weill. It premiered in 1928 at the opening of the Schiffbauerdamm Theater in Berlin. This musical drama, an adaptation of The Beggar's Opera (1728) by the Englishman John Gay, had a major impact on the world stage at the time, and was first performed in Japan in 1933 (Showa 8) by the Tokyo Theater Group led by Senda Koreya. Since the Second World War, it has been performed repeatedly in various forms.

Set in London around 1900, Macheath (nicknamed Dagger Micky), the leader of a gang of thieves, marries Polly, the daughter of businessman Peachum, who opens a beggar's shop, but is betrayed by the prostitute Jenny and imprisoned. Macheath escapes from prison with the help of the Commissioner of Police's daughter Lucy, but is recaptured and sent to the gallows, but is pardoned by an emissary from the Queen and is elevated to the hereditary peerage just before his execution. The play incorporates jazz techniques and features many provocative songs sung in it, with "Micky Messer's Song" being a particularly popular song.

Brecht established his theory of epic drama in Notes to the Threepenny Opera. The film adaptation (1931) by director G. W. Papst is also known as a masterpiece of German cinema in the early days of talkies.

German film. Produced in 1931. This is the first film adaptation of the play of the same name by Bertolt Brecht, which was a huge hit when it premiered in Berlin in 1928. It was directed by Georg Wilhelm Papst. Brecht, who was originally involved in the production, was dropped midway through, sparking controversy and taking the film to court. For the film adaptation, the original dialogue was significantly cut using omission techniques unique to the early days of talkies, and changes were also made to the structure and order of the songs. A French version was also made at the same time, with French actors playing the role of Meckie and several other characters.

The biggest differences from the original are mainly in the latter half of the story, when Polly (Carola Neher, 1900-1942), who is entrusted with a gang of thieves by Mackie (Rudolf Forster, 1884-1968), starts running a bank, a form of "legal exploitation" that is more profitable than robbery.

In 1963, Wolfgang Staudte (1906-1984) and Menahem Golan (1929-) remade the play in a way that was closer to the original story, but Staudte's version emphasized theatrical performance and entertainment value, while Golan's version pursued sharp satire in a dark setting. In 1953, John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, on which Brecht's work was based, was made into a film by Peter Brook and released in Japan under the title The Threepenny Opera.

ドイツの劇作家ブレヒト作、エリーザベト・ハウプトマン協力、クルト・ワイル作曲の三幕戯曲。1928年、ベルリンのシッフバウアーダム劇場の開場にあたり初演された。イギリスのジョン・ゲイの『乞食(こじき)オペラ』（1728）を改作したこの音楽劇は、当時の世界の舞台に大きな影響を与え、日本でも千田是也(これや)らの東京演劇集団により1933年（昭和8）に初演された。第二次世界大戦後は種々の形で繰り返し上演されている。

　1900年ごろのロンドンを舞台に、盗賊団の首領マクヒース（通称匕首(あいくち)メッキー）は、乞食の店を開く事業家ピーチャムの娘ポリーと結婚するが、淫売(いんばい)婦ジェニーに裏切られて投獄される。警視総監の娘ルシーの助けで牢(ろう)を脱出したメッキーはふたたび捕らえられ、絞首台に上るが、処刑寸前に女王の使者が現れて恩赦を受け、世襲貴族に列せられる。ジャズの手法を盛り込み、劇中で歌われるいくつもの挑発的なソングのなかでも、とくに「メッキー・メッサーの歌」は広く人々に親しまれている。

　ブレヒトは『三文オペラのための註(ちゅう)』において彼の叙事詩的演劇論を打ち立てている。なお、G・W・パプスト監督による映画化（1931）も、トーキー初期のドイツ映画の代表作として知られる。

ドイツ映画。1931年製作。1928年にベルリン初演で大ヒットしたベルトルト・ブレヒトの同名戯曲の最初の映画化作品。監督はゲオルク・ウィルヘルム・パプスト。当初製作に参加したブレヒトは途中でおろされたため裁判に訴え、論争を巻き起こした。映画化に際しては、トーキー映画初期に特有の省略技法によって原作の台詞(せりふ)は大幅に削られ、構成や歌の順番にも変更が加えられている。また、メッキー役ほか何人かの登場人物をフランス人俳優に変えたフランス語版が同時製作された。

　メッキー（ルドルフ・フォルスターRudolf Forster、1884―1968）から盗賊団を預かったポリー（カローラ・ネイベルCarola Neher、1900―1942）が、強盗よりも割のいい「合法的搾取」である銀行の経営に乗り出すなど、おもに後半の展開に原作との大きな違いがみられる。

　1963年にはウォルフガング・シュタウテWolfgang Staudte（1906―1984）監督、1990年にはメナヘム・ゴーランMenahem Golan（1929―　）監督により、原作戯曲の展開に近い形で再映画化されたが、シュタウテ版では舞台劇調の演出と娯楽性が強調され、ゴーラン版では暗い画面のなかに痛烈な風刺性が追及されている。また1953年には、ブレヒト作品の基になったジョン・ゲイの『乞食オペラ』がピーター・ブルック監督で映画化され、日本では『三文オペラ』の邦題で公開された。
