A bookbinding is a type of bookbinding that is used to bind handwritten or printed pages together into a single volume in order to prevent them from being lost or to facilitate their reading. Bookbinding has a long history that began with the creation of books.

In the days when books were mainly hand-copied in monasteries' manuscript workshops, binding was usually done by monks within the monastery. However, from around the 12th century, as the so-called "era of secularization" began and manuscript production shifted from monasteries to secular scribes, the professional occupation of bookbinders emerged.
