1878‐1946 Russian critic, thinker, and literary scholar. His real name was Razumnik Vasil'evich Ivanov. He was the son of a minor Georgian nobleman. In 1901, while studying mathematics at St. Petersburg University, he was arrested and exiled for an anti-government demonstration, after which he began writing, and wrote works such as "History of Russian Social Thought" (1907) based on "internal subjectivism," which inherited the ideas of Herzen. He always sought harmony between the intelligentsia and the Narod (the people), and between the individual and society. He formed a "Scythian" group that discussed the crisis of European culture and Russia, as well as the synthesis of philosophy and socialism. He was a member of the Left Socialist Party and supported the October Revolution, but also pointed out the possibility of socialism becoming vulgar.
