Oceanographic research vessel

Japanese: 海洋観測船 - かいようかんそくせん

A ship for oceanographic observation. Most of them are around 1000 tons, but large ships such as the former Soviet Kurchatov (6800 tons), Germany's Altair (4000 tons), and the UK's Discovery II (2100 tons) are also used. There are also special ships such as the former Soviet Ob (12,500 tons), which has icebreaking equipment, Germany's Polarstern (11,000 tons), and the former Soviet Zarya, which has a non-magnetic structure for measuring geomagnetism at sea. They are equipped with winches for raising and lowering instruments into the sea, a room for storing and analyzing data, a laboratory, and computers. In Japan, there are the Meteorological Agency's Ryofu Maru (1200 tons), the Japan Coast Guard's Takuyo (770 tons), the Fisheries Agency's Kaiyo Maru (2539 tons), the Tokyo University of Fisheries' Umitaka Maru (1387 tons), and the University of Tokyo's Ocean Research Institute's Hakuho Maru (3225 tons).
