A Soviet biologist, he was the first person to apply artificial insemination technology to livestock farming. This technology, applied to horses, led to the successful improvement and breeding of horses in Imperial Russia, and he was nominated as a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences for his work. He was the first director of the Central Livestock Breeding Research Institute in Moscow. Many scholars from around the world gathered in his laboratory, one of which was the Japanese physiologist Ishikawa Hidetsurumaru (1878-1947). [Masada Yoichi]

Ivanov [Lev Ivanovich Ivanov]

Russian dancer and choreographer. Graduated from the choreography department of the Imperial Theatre School in St. Petersburg in 1852, he was attached to the Mariinsky Theatre, where he became first dancer under Petipa in 1869 and ballet master in 1885, and went on to present his own independent works. He was also blessed with musical talent and gifts, and music was always a source of inspiration for his dance. He choreographed over a dozen pieces, including the dance of the Snow Fairy at the end of the first act of The Nutcracker (1892), a famous scene full of the poetic charm of nature floating in the girl's fantasy.

ソ連邦の生物学者で,人工授精の技術を畜産に応用した最初の人。ウマへ応用されたこの技術によって帝政ロシアのウマの改良増殖は順調に進み,その功によりソ連邦科学アカデミーの会員に推された。モスクワの中央家畜繁殖研究所の初代所長。彼の研究室には世界中から多数の学者が集まったが,日本の生理学者石川日出鶴丸(ひでつるまる)(1878‐1947)もその一人である。【正田 陽一】

イワノーフ【Lev Ivanovich Ivanov】

ロシアの舞踊家,振付師。1852年ペテルブルグの帝室劇場学校舞踊科を卒業,マリインスキー劇場付となり,69年ペチパのもとで第1舞踊手,85年次席バレエマスターとなり,独立の作品を発表するにいたった。また音楽の天分と才能に恵まれ,彼にとって音楽はつねに舞踊の形象の源泉であった。振付した作品は十数編あるが《くるみ割り人形》(1892)第1幕の終りの雪の精の踊りは,少女の幻想に浮かぶ自然の詩趣あふれる名場面である。
