A plateau in the northern foot of Mt. Bandai in north-central Fukushima Prefecture. It straddles Inawashiro-machi and Kitashiobara-mura in Yama-gun. The plateau is about 800 meters above sea level and was long called Urabandai or Urabandai Kogen. It is one of the centers of Bandai-Asahi National Park. When Mt. Bandai erupted in 1888 (Meiji 21), the mudflows pushed out blocked the rivers of the Nagase River system, and numerous large and small lakes and marshes appeared, including Lake Hibarako, Lake Onogawa, and Lake Akimoto, which are known as the Urabandai Three Lakes. The Goshikinuma Lake Group stretches for about 3 kilometers on the mudflow hills to the east of the southern shore of Lake Hibara. Small ponds such as Yanaginuma, Ruri-numa, Aonuma, Akanuma, Midoronuma, and Bishamon-numa have waters of slightly different colors, such as indigo, cobalt, green, and red. The volcanic topography, which still bears traces of the activity of Mt. Bandai, contrasts violently with the tranquility of these lakes and ponds, making the scenery of the plateau area even more attractive. In recent years, the development of wide-area tourist routes has led to a sharp increase in visitors from Fukushima and Yonezawa. In addition, the Akimoto Power Station has been built, taking advantage of the difference in elevation with the Inawashiro Basin. [Yoshio Nakamura] Mount Bandai is in the background. Lake Hibara Goshiki-numa is the general name for a group of lakes scattered around the northern foot of Mt. Bandai. The photo shows Lake Bishamon, the largest of the group. The lakes, which are distributed over an area of about 3 km, each have their own unique color depending on the water quality and weather.
