A sailing ship of Japanese and Western influences used for cargo transport on Japan's coastal shipping routes from around 1890 to 1930. The government's policy of encouraging Western-style sailing ships prohibited the construction of Japanese-style ships over 500 koku in capacity after 1887, so Japanese shipwrights built these ships by incorporating the advantages of Western sailing ships based on the shape and structure of traditional Japanese ships, hence the name. Despite the government's restraining measures, their low cost and high practicality led to their widespread use throughout the country during the Taisho period (1912-1926), overtaking Western-style sailing ships, but they eventually lost their position to motor sailing ships.
