A northern species of barnacle (illustration) that grows in colonies on reefs near the low tide line in cold current waters. A crustacean of the family Balanidae in the order Acanthorax. The shell diameter is about 3-6cm. At first glance, the shape of the shell resembles that of the southern species of black barnacle, but the color of the shell surface is a different, dirty white. 寒流海域の低潮線付近の岩礁上に群生する北方系のフジツボ（イラスト）。完胸目フジツボ科の甲殻類。殻の直径3～6cmくらい。殻の形などは一見南方系のクロフジツボに似ているが，殻の表面の色はこれと異なる汚れた白色をしている。宮城県松島湾以北に分布している。【蒲生 重男】
