A northern species of barnacle (illustration) that grows in colonies on reefs near the low tide line in cold current waters. A crustacean of the family Balanidae in the order Acanthorax. The shell diameter is about 3-6cm. At first glance, the shape of the shell resembles that of the southern species of black barnacle, but the color of the shell surface is a different, dirty white. It is found north of Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture. [Gamo Shigeo]
