A town in Kesen County in the southeastern part of Iwate Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Kesen River in the Kitakami Highlands, and most of the area is forest and wilderness. Agriculture, mainly horticultural crops and livestock, is thriving. The Kesen River is famous for sweetfish. 岩手県南東部，気仙(けせん)郡の町。北上高地中の気仙川上流域を占め，大部分が山林と原野。園芸作物，畜産を中心とした農業が盛ん。気仙川はアユの産で有名。東日本大震災で，町内において被害が発生。334.84km2。6190人（2010）。
