Anorak - Anorak (English spelling)

A hooded jacket for protection from the cold and rain. Originally it was a loose outer garment made from reindeer or seal skin worn by the Greenlandic Eskimos, and the word comes from the Eskimo word anoraq. To cope with the extremely cold climate of the Arctic, many were lined with fur on the inside. Today, it is widely used as windproof, rainproof, and coldproof clothing for winter sports such as mountaineering, skiing, and skating, and is also popular for winter work. The material is selected according to the purpose, but complex products have come to be made by combining waterproof cotton cloth, vinylon, nylon, and quilted versions of these fabrics. In German, this type of clothing is called Windjacke, and the English word parka also refers to a similar garment (the word comes from the Aleutian Eskimo parka).

防寒、防雨用のフード付きジャケット。本来はグリーンランドのエスキモーが着ていた、トナカイやアザラシの皮でつくった、ゆったりした外着のことであり、エスキモー語のアノラックanoraqが語源である。北極の極寒の気候に対処するため、多くは内側を毛皮で裏打ちした。今日では防風、防雨、防寒着として、登山、スキー、スケートなどのウィンタースポーツに広く用いられるほか、一般に、冬季の作業用としても普及している。材質は、それぞれの目的にあわせて選ばれるが、防水綿布、ビニロン、ナイロン、およびこれらの布地のキルティングしたものなどを組み合わせて、複雑な製品がつくられるようになった。なおドイツ語でこのような衣服をウィンドヤッケWindjackeといい、英語のパーカparkaもほぼ同じような衣服をさす（こちらはアリューシャン・エスキモーのパルカが語源）。
