The term refers to the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures that developed mainly in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The Zapotec culture was born around the 7th century BCE, influenced by the Olmec culture, and was centered around the ruins of Monte Alban. The characteristics of this early Zapotec culture can be seen in part in a stone carving called the "Dancing Man." The fact that this unique relief already bears an inscription combining numbers written with sticks and dots and letters, and its similarity to the stone carvings at the Cerro Sechin ruins in Peru, show some of the importance of this culture.
