A city in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is the third largest city in Canada and the political, economic and educational center of the Pacific coast region. It is located on the delta at the mouth of the Fraser River, near the border with the United States (Washington State). The climate is characterized by an average temperature of 3°C in January and 18°C ​​in July. The annual precipitation is about 1500mm. It was named after the British navigator G. Vancouver in 1792. Until the 1870s, it was a settlement with a lumber industry, but in the 1880s, the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Canada's first transcontinental railway, led to its development. It was incorporated as a city in 1886, and with the opening of the Panama Canal in 1919, it established its position as an export port for grains and lumber from the Prairie to the East Coast of the United States and Europe. In addition to lumber and paper, food processing, shipbuilding, metal processing, printing and other industries are thriving. It is connected to North Vancouver by the magnificent Lions Gate. It is home to the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. Most of Stanley Park near the center of the city is covered with protected natural forest. It is the starting point of four main railway lines to various parts of Canada and the United States, and also has an international airport. Population: 603,502 (2011).

[Died] May 10, 1798. Richmond, Surrey. British navigator. Joined the navy at the age of 13 and participated in J. Cook's second (1772-75) and third (1776-79) voyages. In 1791, he was appointed leader of an expedition to the northwest coast of North America, setting out via the Cape of Good Hope. He traveled north to 52°18′ north latitude and surveyed the Vancouver Island area in detail. In 1793, he explored again to 56°44′ north latitude. In 1794, he surveyed the north coast of San Francisco, then set off for home via Cape Horn and St. Helena. Vancouver Island and the city of Vancouver were named after him. He wrote "A voyage of discovery to the North Pacific Ocean" (3 volumes, 98).

A port city in Washington State, northwestern United States. It is located on the right bank of the Columbia River, and is the terminus of large steamships on the upstream voyage. It was built in 1824 as a base for the Hudson's Bay Company on the Pacific coast. It developed mainly in agriculture, lumbering, and light manufacturing. The fort became a U.S. military reservation in 1848. Aluminum and chemicals are manufactured here, and beer brewing and canning are also thriving. Horticulture and dairy farming are also carried out in the surrounding area. The remains of the old stockade are now Fort Vancouver National Monument, and there is the Grant House Museum, Clark College, and a state school for the hearing and visually impaired. Population: 161,791 (2010).
