…The Thracians who lived in this area later founded Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast, such as Odessos (now Varna) and Mesembria (now Nesebar). The area is home to some of the finest works of the time, such as the ceiling painting in the tomb of Kazanlâk (c. 300 B.C.), which is reminiscent of ancient Greek wall paintings now lost, and the metalwork excavated at Panagjurište (3rd century B.C.). After 46, Thrace and Moesia became provinces of the Roman Empire, and new Roman cities such as Serdica (now Sofia) were built, but the tombs of Pomorie, which date back to the late Roman period, were built using Roman architectural techniques but still followed Thracian traditions. During the Byzantine period, the area was the hinterland of the capital, Constantinople, and many military facilities were built throughout the area, especially by Emperor Justinian. …
