An island in the southwestern tip of Canada, belonging to the province of British Columbia. An extension of the coastal mountain range in the northwestern United States, it was isolated from the continent by glacial erosion. It is mountainous and lushly forested, and the lumber industry is thriving. Dairy farming is practiced on the coastal plain, and fisheries include salmon, herring, and flounder. The state capital is Victoria. G. Vancouver circumnavigated the island in 1792. 31,000 km2 .
