The capital of Nevada, located in the western end of the state, USA. Population 40,000 (1990). Founded in 1858, it was on the stagecoach route to California. The city was named after Kit Carson, a famous frontier pioneer. The discovery of silver deposits in 1859 in the Virginia City area, 25 km northeast, and the development of other mines led to the city becoming a bustling supply point. It is a tourist base with the Sierra Nevada ski resorts and Lake Tahoe to the west, and also functions as the center of the agricultural and ranching region.
