Japanese: 岩井[市] - いわい

An old city located in the lowlands on the left bank of the Tone River in southwestern Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. It is mainly engaged in suburban agriculture, focusing on Sarushima tea and vegetables. A bus service runs from Kanto Railway's Mizukaido Station, and it is connected to Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, by Mebuki Ohashi Bridge over the Tone River. Electrical and machinery factories have also set up here. It is said to be the site of Taira no Masakado's Ishii Camp. In March 2005, it merged with Sarushima Town, Sarushima District, to become a city, Bando City. 90.72 ^km2 . Population: 43,384 (2003).

茨城県南西部，利根川左岸の低地にある旧市。1972年市制。猿島茶，野菜などを中心とした都市近郊型農業を主としている。関東鉄道水海道駅からバスが通じ，利根川にかかる芽吹大橋で千葉県野田市と結ばれる。電気，機械などの工場も進出している。平将門の石井(いわい)営所の地と伝えられる。2005年３月猿島郡猿島町と合併し市制，坂東市となる。90.72km²。４万3384人（2003）。
