A processing method in which a press is used to displace sheet metal in the direction of the sheet surface to form it. The simplest method is bending. The method of forcing a sheet metal into a hole in a die with a punch to make a container is called deep drawing, and the method of applying surface pressure to a sheet metal to form it into a curved shape is called stretch-expand forming. Shearing is used to cut the raw material (blank) for the product from sheet metal. Other examples of sheet metal press forming include flanging, the process of attaching a brim to a cup shape after it has been shaped, and ironing, in which the cup is punched out to form a thinner, deeper cup.

プレスを用いて板材を板面方向に変位させて成形する加工法。もっとも単純なのは曲げである。ダイスの穴の中にポンチで板を押し込んで容器をつくる方法を深絞り加工deep drawing，板材に面圧をかけて曲面状に成形する方法を張出し成形stretch‐expand formingという。板材から製品用の原料板(ブランク)を切り取るには剪断（せんだん）が用いられる。またカップ状にした後にそれにつばを付ける過程のフランジ成形flanging，カップを押し抜いて，より薄肉の深いカップに成形するしごき加工ironingなども板金プレス成形の一つである。
