1890‐1969 Nguyen Sinh Cung was a revolutionary who became the founder of the Vietnamese Communist Party and the first president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. His childhood name was Nguyen Sinh Cung (he changed his name to Nguyen Tat Thanh after entering school) and he was born into a poor family of Confucian scholars in Kim Lien Village, Nam Dang District, Nghe An Province, central Vietnam. He was influenced by the nationalist movement from an early age and left Vietnam in 1911 as an apprentice cook on a French ship, hoping to find a way to save his native country, Vietnam, which was under French colonial rule, within the society of the suzerain.
