Ch'ǒn Kaesomun (English spelling)
[raw]?
[Death] Hozouou 24 (665)
A general and prime minister in the late Goguryeo period of Korea. His other name was Yeon Gaesomun. In the Nihon Shoki, he is written as "Iri Kasumi." He was the son of Taejo. After his father's death, he succeeded him and became the head of the central government at the age of 15. In the 25th year of King Yeongryu's reign (642), he built the Great Wall and dealt with the invasion of the Tang Dynasty. Because the construction of the wall was carried out using harsh methods, the other leaders secretly conspired with King Yeongryu to remove Somun, but when Somun found out about this, he killed over 100 leaders and the king, and installed King Bozang as the new leader. After he gained real political and military power, he promoted national unification and adopted an active foreign policy, accepting Taoist priests from the Tang Dynasty and invading Silla (643) through an alliance with Baekje. When Silla asked for help, the Tang Dynasty attempted to mediate, but the Tang envoys were imprisoned, and so in the 4th year of the Reign of King Tang (645), Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty invaded Silla with 170,000 troops. Suwen repelled the invaders after a bloody battle that lasted 60 days, and they were subsequently invaded five times, but they managed to fend them off well, and the Tang Dynasty failed to achieve its objective.
