Montalvo, Juan

Montalvo, Juan
Born: April 13, 1832 in Ambato
Died January 17, 1889, Paris. Ecuadorian writer. Known as a brilliant debater since his twenties, he went to Paris as a diplomat but returned to the United States in 1860. He was a scathing critic of the dictatorship of Garcia Moreno at the time, and even after the dictator's death in 1875, he continued to call for the reform of domestic politics, which resulted in his almost permanent exile and he spent the last years of his life in Paris. Although he was a romantic individualist with a strong personality, his writing maintains a classical elegance and restraint. His essays include "Seven Essays" (1882) and "Chapters Forgotten by Cervantes" (95).
