Quantitative geography

A branch of geography that uses mathematical methods to seek general laws. Within geography, human geography in particular has tended to be more descriptive and qualitative, and less measurable and theoretical. In addition to reflecting on this, quantitative geography developed after World War II as the use of computers and mathematical methods advanced rapidly. This quantitative geography is theoretical geography, and was considered to approach the essence of geography, but today it is understood as one method of geographical research.

数学的手法を用いて，一般的な法則性を求めようとする地理学の一分野。地理学のうち，特に人文地理学は，記述的，定性的な傾向が強く，計測的理論的な傾向が少なかった。この反省に加え，第2次世界大戦後，コンピュータの利用や数学的手法が急速に進むにつれて発達した。この計量地理学こそ理論地理学であり，地理学の本質に接近するものとされたが，今日では，地理学研究の一つの方法であると理解されている。
