Urban geography

Settlements can be broadly divided into cities and villages, and this field studies cities from a geographical perspective. Traditionally it was a branch of settlement geography, but now settlement geography focuses on villages and has become an independent field of study. Research subjects cover a wide range of areas, including geographical location, natural environment, and location conditions, as well as the process of the formation of cities, social functions, functional differentiation, urban planning, and relationships with other cities and villages, and these are combined to grasp the regional characteristics of cities. It is also involved in urban planning and urban redevelopment in various regions, comprehensive regional development including many urban areas, and issues of urban pollution.

集落を大別すると都市と村落になるが，このうち都市を地理学の立場から研究する分野。従来は集落地理学の一分野であったが，いまでは集落地理学は村落中心とするようになり，それから独立した一つの学問となっている。研究対象は地理的位置，自然環境，立地条件をはじめ，都市の成立過程や社会的機能，機能分化，都市計面，他の都市や村落との相互関係など多方面にわたり，これらを結合して都市の地域的性格を把握する。各地の都市計画や都市の再開発，多くの都市域を含めた総合的な地域開発，都市公害の問題などにも参画している。
