Holl, Karl
Born: May 15, 1866 in Tübingen
Died May 23, 1926. Berlin German theologian. Associate professor at the University of Tübingen and professor at the University of Berlin. He initially studied ancient church history, including the Greek Orthodox Church, but later moved to research Luther and the Reformation. His lecture commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Reformation, "What did Luther understand by religion?", promoted the Luther Renaissance movement in the early 20th century. The distinctive feature of his interpretation of Luther is that he attempted to unify the understanding of forgiveness of sins and sanctification in Luther's theory of justification by faith. His main work is Gesammelte Aufsätze zur Kirchengeschichte (Essays on Church History) (3 volumes, 1921-28).

Holl, Elias

Born: 28 February 1573, Augsburg
Died January 6, 1646. Augsburg German Renaissance architect. Born to a stonemason, he spent two months in Venice from 1600 to 1601, and in 1602 became the chief architect of the free city of Augsburg, which prospered through trade with Italy. He built the arsenal (1602-07), St. Anne's College (13-15), the town hall (15-20, rebuilt after damage in World War II), and the Holy Spirit Hospital (26-30), completing German Renaissance architecture. His representative work is the Augsburg town hall, which combines Italian classicism with German features such as high gables and a tower with an onion-shaped dome. During the Thirty Years' War, he was fired in 1635 because he was a Protestant, and his later years were spent in obscurity.
