A general term for minerals consisting of binary compounds of nonmetallic elements such as fluorine and chlorine, which belong to group 17 of the periodic table, and elements with lower electronegativity. Most naturally occurring compounds are chlorides and fluorides, which are ionic crystals of the salt type. Examples of chlorides include rock salt, potash rock salt, horn silver, carnallite, and chlorite. Examples of fluorides include fluorite and cryolite.
