1714‐70 A British Methodist evangelist. Also read as Whitefield. He was influenced by Brother Wesley at Oxford University and became a powerful promoter of the Methodist revival movement centered around the brothers. He was an eloquent preacher, but was no match for Brother Wesley as an organizer. He leaned toward Calvinism theologically and was not popular, but his influence was profound in the awakening of religious conscience in the 18th century.
