George Whitefield

A British Methodist evangelist. Also read as Whitefield. He was influenced by Brother Wesley at Oxford University and became a powerful promoter of the Methodist revival movement centered around the brothers. He was an eloquent preacher, but was no match for Brother Wesley as an organizer. He leaned toward Calvinism theologically and was not popular, but his influence was profound in the awakening of religious conscience in the 18th century. [Ogura Yoshiaki]

イギリスのメソディスト教会の伝道者。ホワイトフィールドとも読む。オックスフォード大学でウェスリー兄弟の影響を受け，同兄弟を中心とするメソディスト信仰復興運動の有力な推進者となった。雄弁な説教家であったが，組織家としてはウェスリー兄弟に及ばなかった。神学的にカルビニズムに傾き，大衆性はなかったが，彼の影響は18世紀の信仰的良心の覚醒に深く及んだ。【小倉義明】
